On Friday, the team moved Donaldson from the COVID-IL to the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.
The veteran third baseman is slashing .238/.349/.415 with five homers for the Yankees, who hold a 5 1/2 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
In a corresponding move, the team announced Chad Green is being transferred to the 60-day IL. It was announced earlier this week that Green will require Tommy John surgery.
Donaldson had been on the COVID list for the past few days due to experiencing symptoms.
It’s been a tumultuous week in the headlines for the 36-year old.
Donaldson was suspended one game on Monday. It was the same day he was placed on the COVID-19 IL, after calling Tim Anderson “Jackie” on Saturday. Donaldson said it was an inside joke between he and Anderson, who in a 2019 Sports Illustrated article referred to himself as “today’s Jackie Robinson,” and appealed the suspension.
In a Thursday statement, Donaldson issued an apology to Robinson’s family for “any distress this incident may have caused.”
