Gleyber Torres is struggling with his bat and glove to start the 2021 season. And now, the Yankees’ shortstop is dealing with an injury.
Torres received precautionary X-rays and a CT scan after he jammed the ring finger of his right hand. The injury occurred from diving into a base during the team’s 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays, Monday night in Dunedin, Florida.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said all tests were negative on the 24-year old Torres, an encouraging sign. Another sign is the hope Boone expressed in having Torres back in the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale with Toronto, at TD Ballpark.
“He was pretty sore Monday night,” Boone said. “We had them get X-rays and a CT scan just to rule everything out. It came back clean. He’s still a little bit sore (Tuesday), but I would say that he’s probably available to us — certainly, in an emergency, but maybe even more than that.”
Torres wasn’t in the starting lineup for Tuesday night’s matchup against Toronto. Gio Urshela started at shortstop with DJ LeMahieu sliding over from second base to third base. The newest addition to the Yankees, Rougned Odor received the start at second base.
In 10 games played this season, Torres is only hitting .205 with no home runs and just one run batted in. His defense at shortstop has received also continues to be subpar with two errors committed.
