Scott Effross brings a 2.91 ERA with a 28.8% strikeout rate to the Bronx.
The Yankees announced Monday that they’ve acquired Effross from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league right-hander Hayden Wesneski.
Effross, at 28 years old, emerged this season as one of the best relievers in the National League. What’s intriguing about the side-arm throwing right-hander is his success against lefties. This season, Effross has held lefties to a .160/.250/.253 batting line through 85 plate appearances.
The Yankees have a clear need for help in their bullpen. This season, they’ve lost Michael King (fractured elbow), Chad Green (Tommy John surgery) to injury. Additionally, former closer Aroldis Chapman has struggled to regain since returning from the injured list.
With current closer, and 2022 All-Star, Clay Holmes struggling in recent appearances — the arrival of Effross projects to provide a much-needed boost to a banged-up bullpen.
