Chris Gittens isn’t coming in to be the savior for the Yankees, but some saving for this bunch wouldn’t hurt.
The Yankees are at a point in their 2021 season where a change is necessary, something must give with this team.
A trade, a release, a lineup change – anything right now to shake the tables in the Bronx.
Friday night’s 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox was once again a master class in futility from the offense. The Yankees have become honor students at leaving runners on base. They’ve excelled at coming up empty with runners in scoring position, perfect attendance.
It’s getting closer to the dog days of summer. This team’s still waiting for DJ LeMahieu, Gleyber Torres, Gary Sanchez and anyone else — not named Aaron Judge –, to start swinging a consistent hot bat.
The numbers don’t lie, they never do. Therefore, let’s look at the numbers.
The Yankees are hitting .228 as a team. They’re ranked 25th MLB with 215 runs scored. Friday night’s loss was their eighth in their last games.
Their now 4.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
It’s time to shake the tables.
Can Gittens shake the tables for the Yankees?
The 27-year old Gittens has an opportunity to help breathe some life back this team’s inept offense. He’ll bring his first baseman’s glove too. With Luke Voit still sidelined, LeMahieu can slide back over to second base for the slumping Rougned Odor.
Gittens was tearing it up in Triple-A at Scranton/Wilkes Barre. In 53 at-bats, Gittens was batting .283 with four home runs and 11 runs batted in. He was the Yankees’ 12th round draft pick in 2014 and re-signed with the team as a minor league free agent prior to this season.
Now he has an opportunity to prove himself in the Show. The Yankees don’t need Gittens to be their savior, they do, however, need his bat to spark this sleeping giant of a lineup.
In a corresponding move to make room for Gittens, the Yankees transferred starting pitcher Corey Kluber to the 60-day injured list.
