Showalter is the first Mets manager ever to win the award, guiding the team to a 101-61 record in 2022.
After completing his first season on the job, Buck Showalter has been named the 2022 National League Manager of the Year.
At 66 years old, it’s the fourth time Showalter has won the award. It is, however, the first time he’s won it in the National League. Showalter first won the first of three in the American League with the Yankees in 1994. He added one in 2004 with the Texas Rangers and 2014 with the Texas Rangers.
“What a great moment for our organization and our coaching staff, our ownership, scouts, player development,” Showalter said. “The recognition for our organization means a lot to everybody. So thank you, very humbling. Very honored.”
Showalter guided the Mets to a 101-61 record (the second-most wins in team history) and a trip to the playoffs, where New York lost in three games to the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card.
“This is a well-deserved honor,” Mets Owner, Chairman and CEO Steve Cohen said in a press release. “There is no doubt Buck had the players’ respect and they played hard for him. He is one of the sharpest minds in the game and he builds a winning culture.”
Showalter beat out finalists Brian Snitker of the Atlanta Braves and Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Roberts, with 57 total points finished second to Showalter’s 77 point-total.
It’s the first time a Mets manager has won the award, which has been given out since 1983.
Additionally, in the American League, Terry Francona was named Manager of the Year. Francona guided the Cleveland Guardians to an 92-70 record, winning the AL Central division, and surprising many around baseball with their performance.
