Blake Griffin, the NBA free agent, has an opportunity to lay the groundwork for his next chapter. The six-time All-Star is no longer the high-flying, one-man slam dunk show, injuries have altered his game.
Griffin, however, has altered his game for his remaining playing days. And after working a buyout with the Detroit Pistons, he is on the market.
According to multiple reports, specifically NBA insiders Shams Charania and Marc Stein, Griffin appears headed for Brooklyn.
With the NBA entering the All-Star break, the Nets have decisions coming up with their roster.
On Friday, Tyler Cook‘s 10-day contract expired. The 10-day contracts of Iman Shumpert and Andre Roberson will expire. Brooklyn can renew the deals for any of the three players for a new 10-day contract, but that likely wouldn’t happen until after the break. So, with considering bringing Griffin to Brooklyn, there’s roster flexibility for such a move.
While Griffin is going over his options, and the majority of us speculate, there’s logic for the Nets as an ideal fit for the 31-year old.
He’s not the high-flying dunker he was with the Clippers in the “Lob City” days. He can, however, play an integral role as a reserve forward.
Moreover, the Nets are built to win now. Every move made this season, specifically the James Harden trade, has been made with the intention of competing for a championship. Griffin, if healthy, should be highly motivated to compete for a ring on a team with a legitimate chance at winning it all.
The health is a factor worth watching. Fans of the NBA know Griffin’s early days were plagued with injuries. This season, for Detroit, he averaged 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
Every indication is pointing towards Griffin and the Nets as the ideal match. We’ll keep an eye on this and see where it leads.
