The Mets added much-needed help for their farm system with the 19th overall selection of outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, in the 2020 MLB Draft.
Crow-Armstrong is an 18-year old left-handed hitter from Los Angeles, California. He’s slick with the glove (throws left-handed) and is beginning to open eyes with the bat. Crow-Armstrong played ball at Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles.
MLB Pipeline has Crow-Armstrong ranked No. 20 on their prospect board. He’s viewed as a “true center-fielder” and “might be the best defensive outfielder” in the class.
The Mets farm system needs an influx of talent. They’ve been criticized for having one of the weakest prospect pools in baseball. Outfield was a clear need for the team.
“Outfield is the club’s weakest position,” Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News tweeted. “None of the Mets top 15 prospects are outfielders, and their No. 1 outfield prospect is 17-year old Alexander Ramirez, who has yet to play in his first pro game.”
Crow-Armstrong will join Brett Baty, Matthew Allan, Francisco Alvarez, and Ronny Maurico as their top prospects.
Here’s a few extra bases on Crow-Armstrong:
- Crow-Armstrong is a Vanderbilt commit.
- Crow-Armstrong’s parents are both actors. His mom, Ashley Crow, has a long list of roles in movies and television, from “Minority Report” to “Heroes.” She even has a baseball classic in her credits — she played Billy Heywood’s mom Jenny in “Little Big League.” Naturally, that’s Crow-Armstrong’s favorite movie his mom has been in.
- Crow-Armstrong has played for Team USA several times — he was on the U.S. 18U National Team in 2018 and ’19, on the 15U National Team in 2017 and even on the 12U National Team back in 2014, when he pitched and hit.
- As the leadoff hitter and center fielder for Team USA in the 2019 U-18 Baseball World Cup, Crow-Armstrong hit .364 with four doubles and three triples in nine games and robbed two home runs against Chinese Taipei and Australia. He was named the World Cup’s All-World Center Fielder.
- Before his senior season was halted, Crow-Armstrong was hitting .514 in 10 games for Harvard-Westlake, with just one strikeout in 42 at-bats. As a junior, he hit .426 with three home runs and five triples.
- His speed and outfield play are his highest-graded tools right now — Crow-Armstrong might be the best defensive outfielder in the 2020 Draft class. He’s the type of dynamic all-around athlete who reminds some scouts of Grady Sizemore.
