It was another eventful Saturday in the New York City area for college football, Baseline has you covered…
Rutgers: Quarterback carousel continues for Scarlet Knights in blowout win over Wagner
Which quarterback steps up to take the QB1 spot on the depth chart? Is it the highly touted recruit, Gavin Wimsatt? Or maybe it’s third-year sophomore Evan Simon?
With veteran QB Noah Vedral sidelined with an upper-body injury, Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano has used the first two weeks on the schedule to see what he has.
What didn’t take long to find out was how overmatched Wagner looked against the Scarlet Knights.
Racking up 575 total yards, Rutgers took a 28-0 lead on the way to a 66-7 beatdown of the Seahawks.
The ground game was in full effect for Schiano as Rutgers ran up, down, and around Wagner for 328 yards on 54 carries.
Up next for Rutgers (2-0), before the schedule tightens up is a good test this Saturday at Temple (2p.m. ET, ESPN+).
Army: Valliant effort from Ballard not enough in OT loss to UTSA
Chris Ballard left the game midway through the third quarter with leg cramps, then returned to throw a 42-yard pass to Tyrell Robinson for a touchdown with just a over a minute left in regulation.
Despite the rally in their home opener, Army fell short for the second consecutive week. Frank Harris connected with JT Clark in overtime, rallying UTSA to a 41-38 victory over Army on Saturday. The teams combined for 995 yards of offense at West Point. Ballard threw for 221 yards and Army (0-2) finished with 304 yards in the air.
Looking to get into the win column, the Black Knights return to West Point, this Saturday, to host Villanova (12 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network).
Buffalo: Heartbreak City for Bulls, courtesy of Holy Cross
The new-look offense for Buffalo showed signs this week after a poor showing against Maryland. However, their 37-31 loss to Holy Cross shows clear signs the Bulls are moving in the wrong direction.
A last-second Hail Mary touchdown throw by Holy Cross quarterback Matthew Sluka dropped Buffalo to 0-2 on the season.
For just the second time in 14 seasons, Buffalo lost to an FCS program (Football Championship Subdivision). That’s a body blow for a team looking to make a run at a Mid-American Conference championship.
The Bulls will look for their first win of the season, this Saturday, at Coastal Carolina (1 p.m. ET, ESPN+).
Syracuse vs UConn: Orange look legit, Huskies look like they’re in trouble
Syracuse has the look of a football team which could cause waves this season in the ACC. For UConn, the rebuild continues.
Garrett Shrader threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Orange routed their former Big East rival 48-14 on Saturday night. This game was over before anyone had a chance to settle in long enough with their popcorn. Syracuse racked up 465 total yards against the Huskies.
Sean Tucker added 112 yards rushing on 27 carries with a touchdown. Syracuse scored on their first seven possessions.
Zion Turner completed 14 of 17 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. The freshman quarterback continues his baptism by fire with UConn. Nate Carter added 71 yards rushing for the Huskies.
Last week, Jim Mora’s defense allowed just 242 total yards while tallying four sacks in their win over Connecticut State. This week, however, UConn (1-2) had no answers for a Syracuse (2-0) offense which is beginning to open eyes across the nation.
Syracuse will head back home this Saturday for a Noon matchup with Purdue (12 p.m. ET, ESPN 2).
For UConn, it doesn’t get easier. The Huskies head to Ann Arbor to face the No. 4 team in the nation, Michigan (12 p.m. ET, ABC).
