The Jets are showing interest in free-agent cornerback Logan Ryan, per reports.
Ryan is one of the top free agents remaining on the market, it would be significant move by the Jets to sign him.
There’s a handful of question marks at the cornerback position. The current depth chart is Pierre Desir, Bless Austin, and Arthur Maulet. Brian Poole is the nickel corner. Rookie Bryce Hall was drafted in the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft. Hall has potential but is also coming off of serious ankle injury.
Therefore, interest in the 29-year old veteran makes a great deal of sense. He spent his last three seasons with the Titans. Before that, he played four seasons with the New England Patriots. He has 17 career interceptions.
Ryan is a top free agent. But will his resume keep him out of the Jets’ price range?
Brian Costello of the New York Post writes Ryan is reportedly seeking $10 million per year. The Jets have already shown this offseason they’re in no hurry to spend that type of cash.
But, as Costello points out, it would also be surprising to see that type of deal get done this late in free agency. So arguably, the Jets have a realistic chance to land Ryan, if the two can meet somewhere in the middle.
If that somewhere is a possible 1-year deal, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, remains to be seen.
Ryan has New Jersey ties…
Ryan is a 2013 third-round draft pick from nearby Rutgers. He was born in Berlin, New Jersey and went to Eastern Regional High School, in Voorhees Township, New Jersey.
Ryan has two Super Bowl rings from his time with the Patriots. He started at cornerback in their historic Super Bowl LI overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots came back from trailing by 25 points in the third quarter.
Last season, Ryan and the Titans faced the Patriots in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. It was his interception of Tom Brady on New England’s 1-yard line, with Tennessee leading 14-13, that sealed an upset victory. Ryan returned the interception for a 9-yard touchdown. It would turn out to be Brady’s final pass as a Patriot.
