It’s time for the Jets to pull the trigger.
Bring in a big piece to take another step toward the AFC title.
The target is free-agent cornerback Logan Ryan.
If you remember, Ryan — a then Tennessee Titan — intercepted Tom Brady’s last pass as a Patriot and returned it for a pick-six to seal Tennessee’s win.
Published reports broke Tuesday afternoon that the Jets were interested in inking Ryan to a one-year deal.
He reportedly still has been on the free-agent market due to his asking price of $10 million-plus per year.
Ryan is the type of seasoned corner they need. He played four seasons with the Patriots and three with the Titans. He truly is Belichick-tested and has an instant stamp of approval.
Ryan would stabilize a shaky situation at cornerback
Bless Austin and Arthur Maulet emerged last year, and Brian Poole had a sold season last year.
Austin had an average year on coverage, but he struggled with tackles. Maulet also was average at best, as he gave up his share of big plays and had his troubles tackling.
Austin and Maulet need to be more consistent, and the Jets’ seemingly brutal schedule may not play well to their growth.
Poole seems much better in a nickel back, even though he graded very well in starter’s role.
The Jets did acquire Nate Hariston from Indianapolis last year, but he was adequate at best.
They went back to the Colts in the offseason to bring in veteran Pierre Desir, who they hope can bounce back after a mediocre year.
There is rookie Bryce Hall, who they want to watch develop this summer.
The Jets did the right thing in the offseason when they dumped big-ticket bust Trumaine Johnson. He couldn’t stay on the field long enough, and, when he was on the field, was lousy.
Overall, the cornerback picture looks like it is based on potential and needs an anchor.
There are more corners on the market, but Ryan would bring some instant credibility and stability.
The Jets were beat to the punch to sign free agent wide receiver Marquise Lee, who was quickly corralled by the Patriots and could have filled a void.
Get it done, Jets.
Sign Ryan and take another step toward the AFC East title.
