With another new head coach watching closely, all eyes this season are on Jones to sink or swim.
As we veer closer to the start of the 2022 NFL Season, all 32 teams are in training camp and looking to answer essential questions about their roster. Amongst these teams are the New York Giants.
The Giants are fresh off a season where they went 4-13, finishing dead last in the NFC East. The team has since gone out and made some significant roster changes, bringing in former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to become the head coach of the New York Giants.
Therefore, with all the changes the team went out and made, one question still looms over the head of the Giants: what to do with quarterback Daniel Jones after this season?
It’s no secret that the Duke product has failed to live up to the lofty expectations of his sixth pick selection during his time in the big apple.
Through his first three seasons with the Giants, Jones has completed 796-of-1,268 yards, 45 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 84.3. And has a record of 12-25 after taking the helm from two-time Superbowl MVP Eli Manning.
Though his numbers look solid, Jones has regressed in each season in his career thus far, after his rookie season where he threw for 3,027 yards, 24 Touchdowns, and 12 Interceptions. This past season, he threw for 2,428 yards and only ten touchdowns before he was placed on IR after a neck injury in week 12.
If Jones was to improve under Daboll, who would be his third coach in New York, you could expect the team to sign him to a new contract or use the franchise tag to retain him.
So far in training camp, there have been reports of Jones showing signs of his growth in the Daboll offense. According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Jones has delivered his two best practices this week. He’s also showed great chemistry with Kenny Golladay, flashing a connection that was missing in 2021.
Playing well under Daboll would be Jones’s best bet to remain a New York Giant.
