Another quality start from Montgomery, this time with plenty of run support.
Montgomery earned his second win of the season, as the Yankees cruised to an 8-0 win over the Chicago Cubs, Saturday night. The Bronx Bombers were on full display at Yankee Stadium for this one.
Here are the takeaways:
Home Run Derby time
Don’t look now, but a Yankee just hit another home run.
Aaron Judge led off the bottom of the first taking starting pitcher Matt Swarmer deep to give the Yankees an early 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres added two more homers to extend the lead to 3-0.
Jose Trevino took Swarmer deep in the fifth inning. Two batters later, Judge sent another one over the fence for his second of the night. For Judge, his MVP push continues with a major-league leading 24 home runs.
Anthony Rizzo finished off the Home Run derby with his 15th of the season.
Six runs off six home runs to give the Yankees a 6-0 lead and ending Swarmer’s night after five innings.
Jordan Montgomery was ON
Coming into Saturday night, the bullpen for the Yankees hadn’t allowed a run in their last 14.2 innings of work. With the pen putting in another solid week of work, this was an ideal time for Montgomery to give them a break.
With 4 of his last 6 outings being quality starts, the left-hander kept it going with another solid showing. Montgomery allowed five singles over seven innings without walking a batter and struck out five.
Now with an ERA of 2.70, Montgomery finally received the run support which was missing in previous starts.
