Two weeks away from their season opener – yes, it’s happening – the Giants remain a work in progress.
There are no preseason games this year, amid the coronavirus pandemic, therefore it’s safe to conclude all NFL teams are currently a work in progress.
However, this is New York City, the pressure is always turned up, especially when lately there’s been more losing than winning.
Here’s my early thoughts on the Giants as they prepare for the 2020-21 season.
Joe Judge is the new head coach, he has an old school approach and comes from the Bill Belichick coaching tree. The Giants are banking on Judge to lead them back to the playoffs.
This is a team that’s won just 12 games since the 2016 season. They’re on their fourth head coach over that span. Judge has his work cut out for him.
Second-year quarterback Daniel Jones is looking to take the next step in his progression. Jones has the potential to be one of the top quarterbacks in the league. He must, however, cleanup the fumbles and take care of the football. There are early signs in training camp this is still a problem for him.
The offensive line, as projected, has been an area of concern for Joe Judge in camp.
There’s been a handful of changes on the O-Line designed to help improve the unit’s performance. Rookie Andrew Thomas, the number four overall pick in this year’s draft, will get plenty of attention this season. Thomas and third-year lineman Will Hernandez are building blocks on the line, but there’s reason to worry about the rest of the unit.
For Joe Judge to turn around the Giants, he’ll need the team’s core players to excel. If Jones and running back Saquon Barkley are going to lead the offense to success, the offensive line must get their act together.
The Giants will have growing pains this season on both sides of the ball. But unless Judge completely implodes as the head coach, he’ll get more than just a year to implement his style of play.
We’ll be keeping an eye on Big Blue throughout the season. Look out for more updates and posts as we get closer to their week one matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
