Jerry Jones sent the Jets a reminder.
He did himself a big favor, however, when he signed quarterback Andy Dalton to a $3 million deal.
Dalton is one of the best off-season free-agent pickups, as he gives the Cowboys stability in case of an unfavorable Dak Prescott situation. And he is a steal at $3 million.
Now the Jets must take the cue.
They should have taken the hint when the Giants signed Colt McCoy to backup Daniel Jones.
Get yourself a quality backup quarterback.
Where is another Al Woodall?
Yes, I know they drafted unheralded rookie quarterback James Morgan from Florida International, who is regarded as a big arm, raw signal caller.
They also have David Fales, who was resigned. Even though he is 29, Fales is the typical cup-of-coffee quarterback who has bounced around since 2014.
Fales will be there and Morgan may develop some during the summer, but the Jets must remind themselves that Sam Darnold has missed parts of his first two seasons.
The Jets basically forfeited three games after a tight, season-opening loss to Buffalo behind the infamous Luke Falk. He was gone as soon as Darnold returned against Dallas.
They did have Trevor Siemian, who could have handled the situation until he had his ankle broken via dirty cheap-shot hit by Cleveland’s Myles Garrett.
If Darnold misses time again, you have a basically untested Fales or an unready Morgan to take control.
Do you have faith in either one to lead the Jets? Or does McCoy sound a lot better?
Sam Darnold needs a backup for the backup plan.
New GM Joe Douglas did a solid job in the draft and free agency, and the Jets already look a shad better than their 7-9 mark last season. Remember, they won six of their final eight games last year.
Still, the Jets need a better backup plan.
You can rule out Cam Newton because he wouldn’t work here. Newton likely will end up as a starter in
Jacksonville.
Joe Flacco could be a fit, if he’s not looking to be a starter. Like Dalton, Flacco would be stable.
Veterans Matt Moore, Mike Glennon, and Blake Bortles are still available. Any of them could fill the role snugly.
Siemian has been given a clean bill of health and would be a good option.
Sure, Douglas has some other needs to fill before August, but he needs a viable backup quarterback.
If not, keep your fingers crossed about Darnold’s health in 2020.
