The Jets made their first moves in NFL free agency. Teams can now begin negotiating with unrestricted free agents, this means it’s time to spend some money.
It’s what fans have been waiting for after a 2-14 nightmare of a season. The Jets have plenty of work to do this offseason and the heavy lifting starts right now.
General manager Joe Douglas has holes — MAJOR holes — to fill on this roster for new head coach Robert Saleh.
With fans waiting to see what first impression Gang Green would make, and believe me — they’re waiting, Douglas came out swinging on day one.
The Jets agreed to contracts with former Titans wide receiver Corey Davis and former Bengals edge rusher Carl Lawson on Monday night. According to reports, Davis and the Jets agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract with $27 million guaranteed. Lawson reportedly agreed to a three-year, $45 million contract that includes $30 million guaranteed.
The team also came to terms on an agreement with middle linebacker Jarrad Davis, formerly of the Lions.
Through Wednesday, teams are allowed to contact and to enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become UFAs upon the expiration of their 2020 player contracts. No contracts can be signed until the start of the new league year at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
Wide receiver and edge rusher are two holes the Jets are targeting this offseason. Davis is coming off a career year for the Titans with 65 catches for 985 yards and five touchdowns. Lawson has the potential to bring Saleh’s defense a much-needed pass rush. The emergence of tackle Quinnen Williams last season increased the urgency for Douglas to get him more help.
There’s still more moves to make — clear throat: offensive line — but all signs point towards day one being a success for Douglas.
