The 2021 season for Marcus Maye is over.
The veteran safety is one of the team leaders for the Jets. He left Thursday night’s game with what was originally described as a calf injury.
After the game, however, news began to leak Maye’s injury was more than the original reports.
Friday morning, head coach Robert Saleh confirmed that Maye has an Achilles tear and will miss the remainder of the 2021 season.
On a team mostly with young players, specifically in the secondary, Maye’s veteran leadership helped stabilize the team.
“You look at that secondary and he’s the vet,” Saleh told reporters on Thursday night. “You’ve got a lot of second-year and first-year players in that back end and Marcus was that settling force back there. Obviously, a heck of a football player. I’m more concerned for Marcus than I am for what we’ll do defensively to try and fill that void. He’s a fantastic young man. He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do. I’m sick for him.”
