Jamal Adams is an All-Pro safety and is a rising star in the NFL. These are the facts of the case and they’re undisputed.
But contract talks between Adams and the Jets remain at a stalemate.
But according to reports, any rumors of the Jets looking to trade Adams is just that — rumors.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com, the Jets have no intention to trade the star safety, despite the current contract impasse.
The Jets want Adams in their long-term plans. If that becomes a reality still remains to be seen. Especially when interested teams can smell blood in the water .
And by teams, that means the Dallas Cowboys. Adams is originally from Lewisville, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas. There’s an obvious appeal to the thought of returning home to play for the home team — with a big money contract.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson, the two teams haven’t spoken since trade talks for Adams stalled last year. The price of acquiring and signing him could also be too heavy a price for Dallas to pay.
The Jets are seeking a first- and third-round draft pick for the defensive back, per NFL Network’s Michael Irvin.
In three seasons with the Jets, Adams has 273 tackles, 12 sacks, two interceptions, 25 pass breakups, and six forced fumbles. That level of production has him on pace to become the NFL’s highest paid safety.
Adams is set to earn $3,590,292 in the fourth year of his rookie deal, per Spotrac. He’s lived up to the billing that comes with being the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
But the Jets have leverage on their side. Vaccchiano’s report reminds us that Adams is signed through 2021 now that the Jets have picked up his “fifth-year option” at a cost of $9.86 million. And they have the option of using the franchise tag on him once, and possibly twice, beyond that.
Adams isn’t participating in the team’s virtual offseason program. While that is a voluntary program, it remains to be seen if he’ll actually hold whenever training camps begin.
If the stalemate is true, the Jets are playing a dangerous game with Adams and his contract situation.
