New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams will be sidelined eight to 10 weeks after sustaining a foot fracture last week, league sources confirmed Tuesday.
Williams is coming off a breakout season for the Jets where he emerged as the team’s best defensive player with a team-high seven sacks and added two forced fumbles in 13 games.
“With Quinnen, it was an injury that he sustained last week just doing drills here at the facility,” Jets general manager Joe Douglas said on ESPN’s Bart & Hahn. “We’re still in the process of just making sure the imaging’s right and setting everything up, but we feel good about him being back and ready to go full strength at training camp.”
The Jets, under new head coach Robert Saleh, will be switching their defensive scheme from the 3-4 to a 4-3 alignment. The switch should free up Williams to make an even bigger impact with his skill set. This offseason, Douglas also added edge rusher Carl Lawson and veterans Sheldon Rankins and Vinny Curry. One of the goals there, as well, is to upgrade the help around Williams.
With a 300-pound athlete, a broken foot is legit reason for concern. The timeline, however, does lean in the favor of Williams and the Jets. Still, this will be something worth watching when it’s time for training camp.
