The Jets parted ways with expected starter Bless Austin on Wednesday. The news comes with the NFL regular season 11 days away.
Austin, a sixth- round pick in 2019, started 16 games over the past two years for the Jets. He was projected to be the one of the team’s starting cornerbacks this season.
It should also be noted the Jets made a corresponding move with the signing of Sheldrick Redwine. The former Cleveland Browns safety is a former fourth-round draft pick and started eight games for the Browns.
Parting ways with Austin indicates first-year head coach Robert Saleh is moving forward with more playing time for rookies Brandin Echols, Jason Pinnock, and Isaiah Dunn in the secondary.
For this team, rebuilding after a 2-14 season, the youth movement is in session.
“With the youth we have at corner, and the competition they’ve all been able to provide and the growth they’ve been able to have since OTAs and training camp, we’re going to give those guys a run,” Saleh said. “We’re going to give them an opportunity to compete over the next week-and-a-half and roll with those guys.”
