The Jets quickly moved to fill a huge void on their offensive line with the addition of Brown. The 36-year old is a five-time Pro Bowl tackle.
When news of the Jets losing Mekhi Becton to injury began to surface, the name which quickly came to mind as a replacement was Duane Brown.
Making the move to sign Brown, a five-time Pro Bowler, is a no-brainer of a move for the Jets. They’re a team looking to take a significant step forward this season. That starts with the continued development of second-year quarterback Zach Wilson.
With protecting Wilson an absolute must, the Jets need their offensive line clicking on all cylinders.
And now, with Becton likely out for the season, the Jets moved quickly on Brown as their contingency plan.
Yes, Brown is 36 years old — he turns 37 later this month. While this was a strong proactive move by the Jets to offset losing Becton, it’ll be interesting to see how quickly Brown adapts to his new team.
Additionally, Brown has played his entire 15-year career at left tackle. This is worth keeping an eye on as Becton was slotted to play right tackle. Will the Jets move current LT George Fant to the right side, where he’s played before, to accommodate Brown? Fant found his groove last season for the Jets at left tackle when Becton was sidelined with injury.
The Jets had shown interest in Brown before Becton’s injury when they met with the veteran earlier this month.
According to ESPN.com, the Brown’s two-year contract with the team is worth a total of $22 million. Another clear indication of how serious the Jets were about moving quickly to address their offensive line.
