When the Jets signed Carl Lawson, I immediately thought of Quinnen Williams. If I was a betting man, I’d wager I wasn’t the only one with that thought.
The Jets signed Lawson, the former Bengal, to a reported three-year deal. NFL insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported Lawson’s deal to be worth $45 million with $30 million guaranteed.
That’s immediate impact money.
Because immediate impact from Lawson is what the Jets are banking on with this signing. Williams, coming off a superb 2020 season, projects to have an integral role in new head coach Robert Saleh’s 4-3 defense. Lawson’s arrival will give opponents another dynamic to worry about when game planning.
Last season with the Bengals, the 6-2, 265-pound Lawson racked up 5.5 sacks. His ability on the edge was highlighted by his 64 QB pressures, ranked fourth in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus.
He’s only 25 years old which indicates his best seasons could still be ahead. With the 23-year old Williams, and Lawson, the Jets are shaping up well on defense.
