deGrom, a two-time Cy Young winner, will make his season debut Tuesday against the Washington Nationals.
When the right-hander throws his first pitch it will end a 391-day stretch since his last major-league start.
A stress reaction in deGrom’s scapula has sidelined him this season. But on Sunday, Mets manager Buck Showalter confirmed that the four-time All-Star is ready to go.
Last Wednesday, in his fourth rehab start, deGrom threw 67 pitches over four innings for Triple-A Syracuse. He allowed four runs and three walks with six strikeouts in the outing.
Starting pitching for the Mets has come together in recent weeks after some inconsistency. Now, deGrom, the ace of the staff returns to join a rotation of Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt, Carlos Carrasco, and Taijuan Walker. Left-hander David Peterson provides added depth for the Mets as the calendar turns to dog days of August.
