With the signing of Corey Davis, the Jets found their number one receiver for 2021.
There’s still a couple of notable names on the free agent market at wide receiver. The Jets, however, were aggressive in signing Davis.
The former Tennessee Titan agreed to a reported $37.5 million pact, with $27 million in guaranteed money.
Much like the signing of edge rusher Carl Lawson, that type of guaranteed money warrants immediate results with high impact.
Davis was the fifth overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Titans. Last season he emerged and caught 65 passes for pro career highs of 984 yards. He averaged 15.1 yards per catch and a career-high five touchdowns.
$27 million in guaranteed money from a 2-14 team also indicates the sense of urgency the Jets expect from Davis. At 6-3, 209 pounds, he’s a threat on deep balls. Early projections have Davis lined up to be their No. 1 receiver and lined up alongside Denzel Mims. That’s potentially a potent 1-2 threat for the passing attack. And Jamison Crowder, who was the team’s most-reliable target last season, is still in the mix at the slot position.
Davis, Mims, and Crowder can all move the chains for the offense. Last year, Mims showed plenty of promise in his rookie season. The arrival of Davis will create more opportunities for Mims to breakthrough.
Davis’ breakthrough season, as a counterpart with A.J. Brown in Tennessee, earned him a big payday with the Jets. He still must prove last season wasn’t a fluke and he’s not a one-hit wonder.
