The Commanders have a new QB1 leading the way. Carson Wentz, a familiar face in the NFC East, has another fresh start – this time in the DMV.
Wentz shook off a couple of costly mistakes to throw for four touchdowns and lead the Commanders to a 28-22 comeback victory, Sunday at FedEx Field.
Head coach Ron Rivera has hitched his wagon to Wentz as his team’s starting quarterback. For Wentz, it was his first four-touchdown game since the day he tore the ACL in his left knee while with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017.
Two interceptions by Wentz almost put Washington in the L column, however the Jaguars were unable to get out of their own way multiple times.
Ultimately, it was Wentz shaking off adversity to lead the Commanders back for the win. He threw touchdown passes to wide receivers Terry McLaurin and rookie Jahan Dotson. Keep an eye on Dotson, the youngster out of Penn State has big-play talent which was on full display against Jacksonville.
Curtis Samuel caught eight passes for 55 yards and a touchdown and also ran four times for 17 yards. For Samuels, it was his first touchdown since November 2021 with the Carolina Panthers.
McLaurin, Dotson, and a healthy Samuel — that’s three legit weapons for Wentz. With the right adjustments from Rivera and the coaching staff, the Commanders could surprise in the unpredictable NFC East.
Looking Ahead
The Commanders head to the Motor City in Week 2 to face the Detroit Lions (Sunday, September 18, 1pm ET FOX).
