During their training camp session on Monday, Becton went down on the second play of practice and appeared to have suffered an injury to his surgically repaired right knee.
With teams prepping for week 1 of the NFL preseason, training camps are in full swing.
For the Jets, however, concerns are at a high level for Becton.
Per multiple updates from reporters on the scene, the 2020 first-round pick limped to the locker room and was sidelined for the rest of the day.
Monday evening, news of the Becton injury began to circulate.
Head coach Robert Saleh said Becton would be getting an MRI on his knee, but that there was initial optimism that the injury was not significant.
That early prognosis has since been updated by Saleh, doubling down on reports that Becton’s injury is more concerning than the team first thought.
Tuesday morning, Saleh confirmed that this is a “new injury” for Becton, not related to the right knee injury which sidelined him for essentially all of last season.
Since being drafted No. 11 overall back in 2020, the Louisville product has missed 18 games due to injury.
Throughout training camp this summer, with an emphasis on improving his conditioning, there’s been optimism Becton was progressing towards having a productive season. The Jets were working on shifting him from left to right tackle.
While they are still waiting on second opinions, Saleh said “obviously it’s not looking good.” He added that the organization feels “sick” for Becton.
With the regular season quickly approaching, the Jets must shine a brighter light on the depth of their offensive line. If Becton is out, and it most certainly looks that way, veteran left tackle Duane Brown is a likely option. The veteran free agent recently visited with the Jets. There now could be a sense of urgency for the Jets to get Brown signed and into camp.
