Carson Wentz was signed to be the answer for the Commanders at QB1; Four weeks into the season, there’s still more questions than anything else.
Wentz threw for 170 yards and a touchdown; he also threw two interceptions and was sacked two times.
My thoughts on this game won’t lean too heavily on Wentz. However, he’s on his third team in three years, and jury’s still out on if he can be the answer for the Commanders.
Today’s 25-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys won’t do much to give any case for Wentz. What’s clear, however, is Washington’s 1-3 start to the season isn’t all on him.
Yes, receivers Terry McLaurin (15 yards), Jahan Dotson (43 yards) and Curtis Samuel (38 yards) need to get more touches.
But you know what else needs to happen? To start, this team must stop getting flagged so damn much.
11 penalties for 136 yards – seriously.
Washington outgained Dallas, 297 yards to 279. Penalties stalled any momentum they were building on offense. The defense also didn’t show much in discipline with penalties taking two interceptions off the board.
The Cowboys have a legitimate defense, as much as it pains me to admit, they’re for real. Additionally, quarterback Cooper Rush has been solid in relief of the injured Dak Prescott. The bottom line for the Commanders is they’re just not good enough to overcome this level of sloppiness.
Wentz afterwards said he must make better decisions, this much we know. The run game has shown signs of life. But Wentz also needs help from his teammates on both sides of the football. The best help they can provide, right now, is stop with the penalties.
If the Commanders can find a way to clean up their mistakes, maybe Wentz settles down and can get the ball to his playmakers – like week one, when they played winning football.
Until then, we just see the same old Washington Commanders, more problems than solutions.
Currently sitting in last place of what’s turning into a competitive NFC East division.
What’s Next
The Commanders are home next Sunday, looking to quiet their critics – like myself, and will face the Tennessee Titans.
