With many experts picking them to win the NFC East, the Eagles put up their first W of the season against a hungry Lions team.
Jalen Hurts looks like a quarterback ready to take the next step in his progression. QB1 accounted for 333 yards and a touchdown to lead Philadelphia to a 38-35 win, Sunday inside a sold-out Ford Field.
The third-year quarterback ran 17 times, one short of his career high, for 90 yards and a 1-yard touchdown.
Hurts, however, didn’t just hurt the Lions with his legs – he also did it with his arm.
Getting A.J. Brown during the offseason was a great move by the Eagles. Brown showed why in his debut, catching 10 balls on 13 targets for 155 receiving yards. Hurts hit Brown on a perfectly placed 54-yard pass to Brown that led to Philadelphia taking a 24-14 lead at halftime.
With a run game that produced 216 rushing yards, the Eagles have a balanced attack on offense which should only get better as the season progresses.
Give the Lions credit, however, for their resiliency. The Eagles rang the scoreboard for 24 points in the second quarter and had a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter – Detroit managed to get within three after quarterback Jared Goff hit DJ Clark for a 22-yard touchdown with 3:51 left to play.
The Lions have young talent worth keeping an eye on. They’re not ready for prime time yet but appear to be on the right track under head coach Dan Campbell.
Looking Ahead
The Eagles host the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football to close out Week 2 (Monday, September 19, 8:30pm ET, ESPN & ABC).
