Johnson was having a breakout camp for the Giants. With injuries continuing to pile up, losing the 24-year old wide receiver is another body blow to the roster.
Injuries happen, it’s part of the reality which comes with a sport where they pay for play.
For the Giants, however, injuries are ravaging their depth chart. With the regular season less than a month away from kicking off, this team has to be holding their breath it can get through one more preseason game.
Johnson’s breakout Giants camp was derailed Wednesday afternoon when the wide receiver was carted off the field after suffering a season-ending torn Achilles.
Throughout training camp and preseason, Johnson’s name was ringing out as a player to watch. His performance has impressed first-year head coach Brian Daboll.
“The guys that have been out there and producing, Collin Johnson, David Sills, they’ve stepped their game up. And they’re right in the mix, not just to make a team but to play,” Daboll told reporters on Monday. “Everybody’s got to earn their job, earn their role, do a good job of the things they need to do, and make the most of their opportunities when they get them.”
Johnson was selected in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Jaguars before they waived him last August.
In the preseason opener against the Patriots, he caught seven passes for a team-high 82 yards. He followed that up with a three-catch performance against the Bengals on Sunday.
Johnson’s injury comes on the same day as veteran wide receiver Sterling Shepard (Achilles) returning to the practice field.
