For Becton, his season is likely over after the tackle suffered a kneecap fracture in training camp, Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed on Tuesday.
Becton will miss the 2022 season with an avulsion fracture of the kneecap, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
When Becton limped off the practice field on Monday, there was a high level of concern the injury was a serious one. Those concerns grew as the day turned to evening.
By Tuesday morning, with results from the MRI confirmed, those concerns for Becton were confirmed.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he feels “sick” for Becton.
“His story’s not over. He’s got full support of this organization,” Saleh said. “And if you’re a fan that wants to support him you’re more than welcome, otherwise just keep it moving.”
The 2020 first-round draft pick injured the same knee that required season-ending surgery in last September. This injury, however, is a different one.
Becton arrived in New York, drafted out of Louisville, as a highly touted tackle with a rare blend of incredible size and agility. Injuries and conditioning concerns, however, have derailed his progression in the NFL.
With Becton likely out for the season, the Jets will to immediately address their offensive line.
Veteran left tackle Duane Brown has already met with the Jets and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the five-time Pro Bowler is their next topic. Additionally, late Monday, the team signed veteran Caleb Benenoch to a one-year contract.
