Tristian Wirfs or Isaiah Simmons.
That’s the likely choice the Giants will have to make during the NFL Draft.
Do they want to help solve their offensive line issues or solve an edge rusher issue?
Choose Wirfs.
Likely, Wirfs will be there at No. 4 as the first offensive lineman chosen.
Neither Cincinnati, Washington, or Detroit is likely to take Wirfs.
Detroit possibly could take Simmons due to their defensive problems, and head coach Matt Patricia is a Bill Belichick defensive disciple.
Simmons can be an instant game change in Detroit, but he could also bring back memories of Lawrence Taylor for Giants’ fans.
It’s a tough call.
Giants’ GM Dave Gettleman chose the sexy pick in 2018 when he drafted Saquon Barkley instead of a quarterback like the Jets’ Sam Darnold or the Bills’ Josh Allen.
Gettleman fell in love with Barkley before the draft, and he has garnered the same admiration for Wirfs and Simmons.
Choosing Simmons would be the sexy and likely instant impact pick.
However, Gettleman needs to remember his days as Carolina GM in 2013 when he began to build his “hog mollies”.
In his first draft for the Panthers, Gettleman chose two monstrous defensive tackles. The following year, he drafted a monstrous offensive guard and signed one in free agency.
It was the start of the hog mollie run, and it led to a Super Bowl appearance for the Panthers.
Built to protect Cam Newton and create a running game. Have some big bodies up front to open the field more for linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis to roam freely. It helped secure a Super Bowl date in 2014.
At 6-5, 322 pounds, Wirfs is a hog mollie. He and second-year guard Will Hernandez, 6-7, 327 pounds, can be a foundation.
Veteran Nate Solder has to start showing some of his Patriots’ prowess, and left guard Kevin Zeitler needs to bounce back. Spencer Pulley can fill the void at center.
