Joey Gallo was in need of a fresh start elsewhere, the Yankees moved the outfielder to Los Angeles.
On Tuesday, the Yankees pulled the plug on the Joey Gallo show after an underwhelming year in the Bronx.
This was an anticipated move as the MLB trade deadline grew closer. The Yankees sent the outfielder to Los Angeles in exchange for minor league pitcher Clayton Beeter.
It’s not the end game the Yankees were looking for when they acquired Gallo from the Rangers prior to last year’s trade deadline. The 28-year old struggled throughout his time in pinstripes. He looked nothing close to the home-run hitting power threat he’s been in the past.
Gallo finished with a .159 average over 140 games and 501 plate appearances. He hit 25 home runs, along with 77 walks. However, he also struck out 194 times.
“We know the caliber player he is, the talented player he is, and in the window of time we had him, we were unable to unlock that for whatever reason,’’ General manager Brian Cashman said. “He gave it his best shot. We had high hopes and I’m sure he did, too.”
Gallo now heads to the west coast, and the National League, to join the Dodgers in their push for the postseason. His arrival won’t come with the expectations he fell short of in the Bronx.
