Perez helps address a void for the Mets behind the plate with James McCann and Tomas Nido sidelined with injuries.
The Mets went to the Pirates and pulled off another trade — the second in 24 hours between the two teams.
The team announced Saturday that it acquired catcher Michael Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash.
On Friday, the Mets sent right-hander Colin Holderman to the Pirates for DH Daniel Vogelbach.
With James McCann on the injured list with a left oblique strain, the Mets were already thin on the roster at catcher. But now Tomas Nido will likely land on the injured list with a bruised hand.
With the team not ready to call up top prospect Francisco Alvarez from the minor leagues, hitting the market for a short-term solution led them to Perez.
The 29-year old Perez had been recently designated for assignment by the Pirates. He hit .150 for the Pirates this season with six home runs and 11 RBIs in 39 games.
Perez will likely join with Patrick Mazeika to form the Mets’ catching tandem until Nido or McCann returns.
