Stanton is headed to the 10-day injured list because of ankle inflammation.
Update: While the team announced Stanton’s injury as a calf strain, after the game Boone told reporters tonight that the former NL MVP is actually dealing with ankle inflammation.
When the Yankees wrap up their three-game series tonight with the Baltimore Orioles, it’s not a bad idea to give our additional scorecards to the home fans.
The additional scorecards are to keep up with the IL-related roster moves this team’s had to make over the last few days.
New York also placed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga on the 15-day IL and designated catcher Rob Brantly for assignment.
Additionally, outfielder Joey Gallo has been activated from the COVID-IL . Gallo will be in the starting lineup tonight for the Yankees, as their designated hitter.
The Yankees also recalled relievers JP Sears, tonight’s starting pitcher, and David McKay from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
But the status of Stanton, who’s having a strong 2022 campaign, bears watching over the next couple of weeks.
The slugger has been hitting the cover off the baseball this season; he’s tied for fifth in MLB with 11 home runs.
With a slash line of .285/.339/.523, Stanton’s been an instrumental piece in the lineup.
The 32-year old, however, has a history of leg issues. A right knee sprain and left hamstring strain derailed Stanton’s 2019 and 2020 seasons, respectively. Last season, a left quad strain forced Stanton to miss some time.
This season makes for the fourth consecutive year Stanton’s had a stint on the injured list.
The Yankees are getting hit hard right now by the injury bug within the last week. Pitchers Chad Green (Tommy John surgery), Luis Gil (Tommy John surgery), Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder inflammation) and their closer Aroldis Chapman (Achilles Tendonitis) have all hit the IL.
