Minutes before today’s doubleheader against the White Sox, the Yankees announced a flurry of roster moves, including Gallo and Higashioka.
Players can be placed on the COVID-related IL for positive tests, experiencing symptoms or for contract tracing purposes.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Gallo was “under the weather” yesterday. However, the plan was to have him play in Game 2 of Sunday’s doubleheader. Instead, Gallo, along with Higashioka, will now be away from the team.
In additional moves, the Yankees have moved catcher Ben Rortvedt from the 10-day IL to the 60-DAY IL. Additionally, the club recalled righty David McKay and signed catcher Rob Brantly to the active roster.
Rortvedt recently underwent knee surgery and isn’t expected to return to game activity for 6-8 weeks. With Higashioka sidelined, the catching duties will likely shift more towards Jose Trevino with Brantly as a backup.
In the outfield, the Yankees have Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, and Giancarlo Stanton ready to go. Moreover, look for Marwin Gonzalez to get more time on the field — specifically when Stanton slots into the lineup at DH. Moreover, speedster Tim Locastro continues to progress in his rehab from a strained lat.
