Iona has a strong offense, defense, and a Hall of Fame coach adding another impressive chapter to his resume.
Tuesday night, the Gaels improved to 9-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season. The 74-57 win over Siena was a master class on imposing will onto opponents.
Iona posted a season-high 11 blocks while matching a season best with 13 steals. Siena committed 18 turnovers.
“We had to win this game with defense early on because our offense wasn’t there,” head coach Rick Pitino said. “That’s the good thing about this basketball team. We’ve won some games with our offense and won some games with our defense.”
The Gaels led by as much as 25 in the second half. For Siena, it was an uphill battle all night.
Elijah Joiner, Nelly Junior Joseph, and Ryan Myers scored 13 points apiece for Iona.
Iona (17-3 overall, 9-0 MAAC) has now defeated 15 straight MAAC opponents dating back to last season including the final two regular season contests and all four tournament games.
Iona is the clear-cut favorite in the MAAC, moreover, Pitino has them among the best of mid-major programs in the nation. This isn’t a team opponents will want to see in March when the Madness begins.
