The New York Giants have decided to hire Joe Schoen as their next general manager.
Schoen, 42, spent the past five seasons as the assistant general manager of the Buffalo Bills. Serving as right hand to general manager Brandon Beane, he helped build the roster that’s become a playoff team and Super Bowl contender. Schoen replaces Dave Gettleman, who retired as the Giants’ general manager this month.
With more than 20 years of scouting and executive experience, Schoen quickly emerged as a leading candidate in the interview process.
“We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager,” said Giants president John Mara. “Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager.”
Schoen will have his hands full in his new position, firstly hiring the team’s next head coach.
The Giants never reached the playoffs during Gettleman’s tenure. The two coaches he hired, Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge, went a combined 19-46. Following this past season, with a 4-13 record, the team relieved Judge of his duties.
Getting to know Joe Schoen
- Graduated from DePauw University with a communications degree in 2001. Played quarterback as a freshman before switching to receiver in his final three years.
- Broke into the NFL as a ticket office intern with the Carolina Panthers in 2000. Bumped up to scouting assistant and was later promoted to southeast and southwest scout.
- Spent five years as the Miami Dolphins’ national scout before being promoted to assistant director of college scouting. Spent four years serving as their director of player personnel.
- Served as the assistant general manager of the Buffalo Bills since 2017. Buffalo made the postseason four out of his five seasons after the franchise hadn’t made it since 1999.
“It is an honor to accept the position of general manager of the New York Giants,” said Schoen. “I want to thank John Mara and Steve Tisch and their families for this tremendous opportunity. And obviously I am grateful to Brandon and the Bills for the experience I have had in Buffalo.
“Now, the work begins. My immediate focus is to hire a head coach, with who I will work in lockstep with to create a collaborative environment for our football operations. We will cast a wide net, it can be former head coaches, first-time head coaches but, more importantly, it has to be a person who possesses the ability to lead an organization and the ability to motivate and develop players. On the personnel side, we will begin to evaluate our roster and prepare for the draft and free agency. Our goal is to build a roster that will be competitive, have depth, and most importantly, win football games.”
