For the Jets this week, Murphy’s law won this round.
This was ugly, it was brutal, and it was over before anyone could get comfortable in their seats.
And now, with another game in the loss column, there’s concern for rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.
The Jets were embarrassed Sunday afternoon by the New England Patriots, 54-13, at Gillette Stadium.
Wilson left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury and did not return.
With C.J. Mosely (hamstring) inactive this week, the Patriots took it right to the Jets with the ground attack. A chunk of their big-play runs went right up the middle of the defense. The Jets sorely Mosely as their defensive play caller and leader.
The Jets (1-5), once again, failed to avoid another slow start.
Head coach Robert Saleh’s bunch has now been outscored in the first quarter this season, 44-0. For additional context, the last team to go scoreless in the first quarter in each of the first 6 games of the season was the Detroit Lions in 2008. The Lions went 0-16 that season.
After deferring the coin toss to New England, the Jets allowed a trick play on the opening drive when wide receiver Kendrick Bourne took a backwards pass from quarterback Mac Jones and then throws a 25-yard touchdown to veteran wide receiver Nelson Agholor.
Following a three and out by the Jets, the run game for New England took over and finished off the drive with another touchdown, a 1-yard run by Damien Harris.
With 7:21 left in the first quarter, the Jets were already down 14-0.
It was an uphill battle from there on for the Jets, an all too familiar scenario for this team.
The O-Line for the Patriots came into this week with question marks due to injuries. However, they helped keep the Jets defense off-balance all day. Credit New England’s O-line for setting the tone early.
It was the team’s 12th straight loss to the Patriots. Additionally, the Jets allowed 50 points for the first time since 1995.
