For the Mets, it’s back to the drawing board.
The team’s offseason pursuit for a new President of Baseball Operations will continue. This is because two more names of interest are reportedly out of the running.
Billy Beane, executive vice president of the Oakland Athletics, has withdrawn his name from consideration, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
News of Beane’s withdrawal was followed shortly thereafter with another tough break. The Milwaukee Brewers denied the Mets permission to interview their president of baseball ops, David Stearns.
For those out there keeping count, that’s now three names off the wish list of many within the fan base. Former Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs executive Theo Epstein also reportedly declined the job earlier in October.
It appears team owner Steve Cohen and team president Sandy Alderson will need to hit a reset on their search.
Meanwhile, with the team’s top reported names now out of the running, it’ll be interesting to see which direction the Mets turn for their next pool of potential candidates.
