While we wait to see what happens with Aaron Boone, offseason decision-making for the Yankees is underway.
The team will not renew the contracts of third base coach Phil Nevin and hitting coach Marcus Thames, per multiple reports.
Thames had been on the Yankees staff since 2016 and has been the team’s hitting coach since 2018. The 44-year-old for MLB player also began his playing career with the organization, making his major -league debut in 2002.
Nevin came on as third base coach for the Yankees when Boone was hired as manager. Nevin, a longtime veteran of the game, drew the ire of many within the fan base when he green-lit Aaron Judge on a failed attempt to score in this season’s AL Wild Card game. The pivotal play contributed to the Yankees’ elimination from the postseason.
The Yankees struggled this season on offense with two glaring statistics which likely played major roles in deciding the futures of Thames and Nevin with the ballclub.
They averaged 4.39 runs per game, ranking 19th in the majors. They also had 22 runners thrown out at home, an MLB high.
Nevins and Thames confirmed to the New York Post their contracts were not being renewed.
Additionally, assistant hitting coach P.J. Piliterre was also notified he will not be returning.
