The Mets made official what most of us saw coming as their season spiraled out of control. After two seasons, Luis Rojas is out as manager. The team will not be picking up the option for 2022 on his contract, the team announced Monday.
Rojas has been offered the opportunity to remain with the organization in another capacity. For the rest of the coaching staff, decisions will be made in the coming days.
The Mets finished the 2021 season with a 77-85 record, third place in the National League East division; 11.5 games behind the division champion, Atlanta Braves.
Rojas replaced Carlos Beltran as manager prior to the 2020 season after Beltran resigned in light of his role in the Houston Astros’ 2017 sign-stealing scandal.
Rojas finished with a 103-119 record in two seasons as manager, the Mets failed to reach the postseason during his tenure.
It’s a disappointing conclusion for Rojas, he’s been part of organization for 16 years. But with expectations high, he fell short in guiding the team to the postseason.
After spending much of the season leading the NL East, the Mets went just 29-45 in the second half to miss the playoffs and finish under .500.
