The Yankees are streaking!
No, not like in the film Old School when Frank the Tank attempted to streak his way up the quad and to the gymnasium. That’s not what’s happening here, not even close.
When we last left the Bronx Bombers, they’d just received an injection of new blood in the additions of Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo, at the trade deadline in July. This helped jumpstart the Yankees, as hoped.
In 25 games played since July 30, the Yankees have won 21 of them. Their 5-4 road win over the Atlanta Braves, Tuesday night, extended their win-streak to 11 games.
This is the same team we were looking at less than a month ago that had us ready to throw our televisions out the window.
The 11-game winning streak is their longest since August 31 to September 10, 1985.
To put that in perspective, let’s look at it this way…
In 1998, the Yankees played 162 games and won 114 of them – and a World Championship. However, as great as they were, they didn’t have an 11-game winning streak that season.
Time will tell if the 2021 Yankees bring another championship to the Bronx this fall. What they’re doing, meanwhile, is playing up to the expectations of a championship team.
Manager Aaron Boone deserves the credit he’s getting these days. He’s navigated this team through injuries, inconsistent performance, and enough criticism from the fan base to make Mayor de Blasio cringe.
The flipside to this coin is there’s still plenty of time left for what’s right to go terribly wrong.
Injuries have huffed and puffed at the Yankees all year while attempting to blow away any hope of a playoff push. Furthermore, while the bats are hot right now, there’s a glaring issue in the bullpen with Aroldis Chapman which needs to be fixed sooner than later.
Champan’s struggles could eventually cost him his role as the – sometimes closer. It’s sometimes, because, despite the issues he’s had this season, Boone keeps putting him out there with the game on the line.
What we do know, right now, in this moment right here, all that matters is the winning must continue.
September is almost here, and the dog days of summer are nearing its final lap on the calendar. It’s winning time, the Yankees are streaking and they’re right where they need to be.
It’s as close to the quad and the gymnasium as they’ve been all season. The job’s not done, but Frank the Tank would be proud.
