The Giants were strong on defense last season, this was largely due to the play of their secondary which played an integral role.
With a year under head coach Joe Judge, and defensive coordinator (also assistant head coach) Patrick Graham, the secondary could be one of the best units in the league.
Yes, it’s the Giants we’re talking about.
The beautiful thing about the start of training camp is all the talk of how good a team potentially can be.
Here in the New York City area, we’ll take a closer look at the potential of the Giants and Jets as they move forward in their respective camps.
With this secondary, this hype is legit
For the Giants, the offseason hype about how good their secondary can be is legit. Pro Football Focus has the Giants ranked seventh overall in their positional and unit rankings for the 2021 season.
James Bradberry is coming off his first Pro Bowl season. This offseason, the Giants went out and signed Adoree’ Jackson to a substantial free agent deal. Lining up Jackson at the other cornerback position opened eyes around the league.
Bradberry’s 79.9 coverage grade last season ranked seventh among qualifying cornerbacks in his first year with the Giants. Jackson’s 82.5 mark in 2019 in his last full season of action ranked sixth. The potential is there for this to be one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL.
Pro Football Focus
The Giants have veterans Logan Ryan and Jabrill Peppers returning at their respective safety positions. Rounding out the secondary unit is a young core which includes Aaron Robinson, Julian Love, Darnay Holmes, and Xavier McKinney.
Last season, after a slow start, the unit picked up their play and finished 16th in the NFL against the pass.
If the Giants are to have success in 2021, the play of their secondary will need to live up to all the offseason hype.
