Daniel Jones is entering his third season as an NFL quarterback. This will be his second full season as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants. Will this be the year where Jones takes the massive leap forward?
With training camp now officially open, the Giants will ramp up their preparations for the 2021-22 season. The spotlight will be on Jones and his continued development as the franchise quarterback. This is his next step.
Is the third season for an NFL player their make-or-break year? If this is the case for Jones, he is at a critical point in his young career.
For teams evaluating third-year quarterbacks, the stakes are high. It’s where decision-makers look to see if they have the right person leading their franchise into the future.
We’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly from the 24-year-old Jones. The potential to become one of the top quarterbacks in a suspect NFC East division is there. But there’s also the old saying about potential, it helps get the groceries but it’s not enough to cook the meal.
In the offseason, the Giants took large strides to get Jones what he needs to succeed
In 2020, the team finished with just 12 total passing touchdowns and averaged only 17.5 points per game. General manager Dave Gettleman decided to add weapons at wide receiver and tight end.
The offensive line is still mostly young and unproven; however, head coach Joe Judge saw enough in the unit where’s there’s strong optimism for continued growth in 2021.
And now, all eyes will turn to Jones and if he can help pull it all together.
He can put ball in the end zone with his arm and legs. He’ll need to continue taking better care of the football. Moreover, while his passing yards in 2020 (2,943) were down from 2019 (3,027) – his completion percentage went up from 61.9% to 62.5%.
Jones has an upgrade in playmakers to get the football in 2021. He’s been lauded by his peers for his preparation, and he has two years of NFL experience under his belt as the starting quarterback for a big-market team.
Now’s the time for him to solidify his position as a long-term cornerstone for the Giants.
