Another strong performance from Tylor Megill has the Mets buzzing about the rookie righthander.
Megill has made three major-league starts and this most recent one was his best. He threw five innings of two-hit baseball, along with notching seven strikeouts to help lead the Mets to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, Monday night at Citi Field.
He allowed a solo home run to Omar Navarez in the fourth inning. Despite that one hiccup, Megill continued to impress with his poise.
The 25-year old still has yet to record his first victory, however his ERA is now at 3.77 through three starts. He’s been a pleasant surprise for the Mets and manager Luis Rojas.
“He’s been doing for us exactly what we needed, probably even more than what we needed,” Rojas said after the game. “He’s been outstanding.”
What the Mets needed was more insurance for their injury-riddled starting rotation. With team general manager Zack Scott keeping a close eye on the July 30 trade deadline, Megill has helped stabilize the back end of their starting rotation.
Megill — cool, calm, and collected
“How he’s handled himself, and how the game has given him an opportunity, and how he’s impacted our team — it’s just been tremendous,” star first baseman Pete Alonso said. “What he’s been able to do, it’s awesome how he’s been so poised, calm, cool, collected, and just ready to rise to the occasion.”
Megill is showing the poise of a veteran that’s not afraid of the moment. The Brewers are leading the National League Central division. They sent their best pitcher to the mound Monday night, Brandon Woodruff, to matchup with Megill.
The Mets eventually were able to knock Woodruff out the game after he baffled them for six innings. Alonso broke a seventh inning tie with his 2-run double off the All-Star pitcher. Megill, meanwhile, did just enough to keep his team in the game. It was enough enough for the offense to eventually pick him up.
Not bad so far for the organization’s 21st ranked prospect. Kudos to him for being ready when the Mets called his number.
