Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom and Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole have been named the Pitchers of the Month for April in their respective leagues.
It’s the first time since the award was introduced to the AL in 1979 that winners from both leagues came from New York.
Over five starts in April, deGrom posted a 0.51 ERA with 59 K’s, four walks and 16 hits allowed in 35 innings. With 50 strikeouts over his first four starts, deGrom passed Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan and Shane Bieber for the most by a pitcher in his first four starts of a season.
Cole made six starts in the season’s first month and went 4-1 with a 1.43 ERA, 62 strikeouts and three walks. He held opposing hitters to a .178 average.
Cole’s 62 strikeouts were the second most by a Yankees pitcher in any calendar month, trailing only Ron Guidry’s 64 in June 1978, the same year the left-hander won the American League Cy Young Award.
