The tough times for Dellin Betances as a Met continues.
Betances was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Mets due to a right shoulder impingement. Right-hander Trevor Hildenberger will take his place in the bullpen.
It’s been an uphill battle for Betances since signing with the Mets. While with the Yankees, he was one of the hardest-throwing relievers in baseball.
The velocity for Betances has not been there for him like in the past. At 33 years old, it’s fair to ask how he’s planning to adjust to a possible new normal. Can he evolve into a different type of pitcher, one that doesn’t rely on the fastball as much?
Betances struggled in his season debut in Philadelphia, topping out at 93 mph and averaging 92 mph with his four-seam fastball. Afterwards, he reported soreness to Mets trainers. Subsequent testing revealed the impingement.
