Daniel Jones still has the one voice in his corner that matters, his head coach. The debate, however, is picking up steam with every loss. With Jones, do the New York Giants have their quarterback of the future? Has he even been drafted yet?
This past Sunday, the Giants were driving for what they hoped would be a touchdown and tying two-point conversion. Jones’ pass to Damion Ratley was intercepted by Los Angeles cornerback Darious Williams at the five-yard line with 52 seconds remaining. The pivotal play sealed the Giants’ 17-9 loss to the Rams in SoFi Stadium.
First-year head coach Joe Judge, however, when asked about the development of Jones, continues to support his young quarterback.
Judge knows there’s situations that Jones must be clean up. He also reminded the media this is a young man still developing.
I agree with Judge defending Jones to the media, but how long that continues is up to the one throwing all the interceptions.
In 16 career starts, he’s has thrown 17 interceptions. If Judge’s coaching style is all about accountability and attention to detail, his quarterback needs to get his act together.
Jones, in his second year as the starting quarterback, is regressing. Judge needs to know who’s in this for the long run with him, that starts with the quarterback.
The 2021 NFL Draft projects to have quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields at the top of the board. The Giants, at 0-4, are moving towards an uncomfortable conversation.
